Whaiora is proud of the work we do with Spirited Women, the all adventure race where women team up, train, head away for a girl’s weekend, and have an absolute blast of an adventure together - side by side all the way.
This year at the beautiful Ohope Beach, just over the hill from Whakatane, we were there to witness the blood, sweat, tears and smiles as everyone crossed the finish line, helping everyone recover with a nourishing smoothie.
Kathrine Switzer, author, activist and athlete, was the guest speaker at the prize giving. She’s an inspiring woman whose work began 45 years ago when she was the first woman to officially enter the Boston Marathon - when it was considered a men’s only race! She summed the Spirited Women event up with, “ordinary women achieving something extraordinary” and that’s how we feel too.
There’s nothing that compares to the sense of achievement at the finish line. Imagine ocean kayaking in one-metre swells, hiking and biking very steep and challenging terrain for hours on your own - you probably wouldn’t do it. Yet that is the magic that unfolds when a group of women tackle the unimaginable and achieve the truly amazing.
It is true what they say, the magic happens outside of your comfort zone, and here it happened with the support and encouragement of team mates. It was a privilege to witness all ages, all shapes and sizes out there working as a team to achieve the seemingly impossible.
Bring on 2019!
